Oh slap me silly, Semin!

Marc Staal hits Semin, then Ovechkin hits Staal, then it looks like Semin crashes in the goalie intentionally and Staal takes offence to that and drops the gloves. The only problem is the skilled Russian looked like a little girl when he was slapping the sh*t out of Staal in their brief tilt. The play by play guys get a good laugh out of it. So did I.

Rangers have a Sundin hangover?

Just thought I'd point this out:

Sundin signed with the Canucks on December 18.
The Rangers had won 3 straight games, including 4 out of their previous 5 games prior to that date.
Since the 18th, the Rangers have lost 3 straight. Coincidence?

The Canucks have a bit of a pattern going on as well. Before the 18th they had won 3 of their previous 5 games. Since Sundin signed they have lost 3 of the 5 games. But we don't have a world class goalie in net, and the pattern is less obvious.

Yep, just taking a jab at the Rangers and their fans because it feels good.

Forsberg to Rangers? Naslund hopes so.

Ok, I know some papers are starting to hype Forsberg already and that perhaps he will make an early return. But let's be realistic here. Forsberg is nowhere close to returning to play in the NHL. He has already said he would like to play for Colorado. And bottom line? The guy is made of glass like a certain Canucks player that we are accustomed to seeing being injured.
This is BS news at this point and it will be for months. Yes Naslund wants him in New York. Yes, Naslund wanted him in Vancouver. I'm not going to buy into a Forsberg return until his his foot heals, which may not happen at all. So dream on, New York. And dream on, Naslund. This is not news. Mats Sundin signing with the Canucks is news. Forsberg returning to the NHL is, well, a broken record.

Report: Sundin is waiting for Rangers to clear cap space **UPDATE** Sportsnet: Decision by Friday-*edit*:believe nothing you read or hear

From our "fave" reporter from the New York Post:

Mats Sundin is waiting for the Rangers to clear enough cap space to present him with a full-season $6 million contract offer before he commits to joining the BlueshirtsNew York Rangers , The Post has learned.

Thus, with the NHL holiday roster freeze going into effect Friday night at midnight and lasting through midnight Dec. 27, Sundin - who has a $10M offer on the table from the Canucks that he obviously is in no hurry to accept - is likely to remain unsigned until late in the month.

The 37-year-old former Toronto captain had recently established Friday as his target date for committing to one of the two finalists bidding for him, but unless Rangers GM Glen Sather can engineer multiple moves within the next day, that soft deadline will not be met.

J.P. Barry, Sundin's North American representative, said yesterday that Sundin might accept a conditional offer from the Rangers, but that is nonsense.
Yeah, I believe this story actually. It's like one fan said, that basically the Rangers will make up his mind for him. They will clear the cap space to offer Sundin what he wants or they won't.

UPDATE 11:33AM

According to Sportsnet:
Sundin's agent J.P. Barry said he's very confident the ex-Maple Leaf captain will make his decision by Friday, according to Daren Millard, who spoke on Thursday's Hockeycentral@Noon radio program in Toronto.
Heard this shiz before. Not holding my breath.

Gillis: Sundin decision on Thursday **UPDATE** Rangers offering half of what Canucks have on table?**UPDATE** Barry says not necessarily Thursday

From the Vancouver Sun:

“He is going to make a decision on Thursday about the final destination,” Gillis said following the Canucks’ practice at GM Place. “We reiterated our position and formalized our offer moving forward. We feel good about our team and where we sit and what we have to offer. We’ll see how it plays out.”

Then Gillis said something that I have been wondering about:
Sundin’s decision may have come earlier than Thursday if not for Wednesday night’s ceremony honouring former Canuck Trevor Linden.

“He is aware that we have a very important evening coming up tomorrow night and being the type of person he is — he has been a captain of a Canadian team for a long time — he is cognizant of the attention that an evening like tomorrow night gets and I think it has played into it a little bit,” Gillis said.
OK, so my problem with this is: If he is signing in Vancouver, then I can see why he'd wait until after the Linden ceremony. If he was already decided about signing in New York, then why wouldn't he have just come out and said it? So that management and players wouldn't be "bummed out" during the ceremony? His lack of verbage before the ceremony is what's (in many cases) deterring some Canucks fans' attention span, including mine.
Anyways, mercifully this saga is almost over.

Gillis on Team 1040 at 3:50 PM:
-Our team is well positioned.
-No blemishes or areas of concern with the team.
-Wants nothing to interefere with Linden night. Sundin camp understood.
-Don Taylor said he's optimistic. Optimistic? Gillis says "you guys can twist anything into something positive or negative."
-Gillis has sent Sundin DVD's of Canucks games showing Canucks' character and style of play.

UPDATE - 10:30 PM

Sportsnet has learned that New York's offer is less than half the deal the Canucks have tabled, which would leave Sundin well below fair market value. The Rangers are trying to avoid dismantling the team to make room for Sundin. That way, the Rangers would not be forced to trade some of their high-priced talent like Michal Rozsival, Wade Redden, Scott Gomez or Chris Drury. Otherwise, New York would have to free up US$2.8 million, as some reports suggest, to sign Sundin for the second half of the season.
Well doesn't that throw a twist in things... If this report is true, then we will know Sundin's true intentions when it comes to it being about the money or not. That will push his "morals" to the limit won't it? You know what his agent will say about this offer.
But if Sundin accepts THAT much fewer dollars to play in Manhattan.... it just adds to the damned problem this city has attracting superstar caliber players.

UPDATE: 11:58 PM

Oh jeezuz. Here we go again. From the Vancouver Sun (tip to Temujin):
“I did tell Mike that Thursday would be the earliest,” Barry told The Vancouver Sun in a telephone interview from Alberta later in the day. “I am not going to hold Mats to any kind of deadline. He has never been held to one before and he’s not going to be held to one now. He says he is going to try and make a decision by the end of this week.

“It may not be Thursday if he struggles with the decision. He is going to make up his mind this week, is what he has told us. But we are not going to put any deadline on him.”
I don't own a gun. Can someone please come to my place and shoot me dead right now please? Fuck it. I'll drink myself to death. Let me know in hell what Sundin decides.

I think this cat's reaction about matches mine right now:

Fan 590's Bob McCown saying Sundin will sign with Rangers this week **Updated** False says Barry **UPDATED**Barry talks with Hockeyexpressen

THE FAN 590's Bob McCown is reporting that former Toronto Maple Leafs' captain Mats Sundin has decided to join the New York Rangers. McCown's source, who has intimate knowledge of the situation, expects this decision to made public later this week. The folks at the CDC forum are saying that JP Barry has denied that claim, but no credible link to that denial is present.
Larry Brooks reported a couple days ago that

Sundin, who met with GM Glen Sather and selected members of the hockey department in New York this weekend, left the Garden with pals Henrik Lundqvist, Markus Naslund and Fred Sjostrom after watching Saturday's shootout victory over the Hurricanes from a suite.
Is Markus Naslund finally going to get his wish?
"I do not know much about it and I do not know how he thinks. But I hope he is thinking of the Rangers as an option in all cases."
-Naslund told Hockeyexpressen this past weekend. So he hangs out with him but knows nothing? I doubt that.

UPDATED 10:04 PM PST

Confusing. McKenzie's article states:
There had been speculation that Sundin had already made his decision and that he was about to sign with the Rangers, however Barry dismissed the rumours.

"No decision has been made," Barry told TSN. "(It is) inaccurate speculation."
McKenzie apparently wrote that at 5:23 PM I would think EST. The Fan 590 is still quoting McCown right now that Sundin will sign with the Rangers. Good ol' rumorville.

I think Sportsnet's Doug MacLean said it best tonight: Canucks fans better start praying that Sather doesn't make any moves this week. That would be Canuck fans that actually want Sundin here.

UPDATE 10:12 AM TUESDAY

JP Barry has talked with Hockeyexpressen last night.
"Mats' focus is now on these two clubs, the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks. We are about to collect the latest data to the decision-making Mats wants before he decides, "said JP Barry.

Vancouver already offered in the summer, one year's salary of 80 million, what the Rangers want to pay?
"It is one of the things we are discussing with the Rangers right now. They must clarify to us what they are willing to pay the salary for Mats.
When can we have a definitive answer?
"My guess is that it will later this week."
Sundin has to decide before the weekend?
"No, not really. But the NHL's Holiday Voices Freeze comes into force on Friday and runs until Dec. 27. During that time, no player transactions made."
Mats can be verbally agreeing with a club and then write the contract on December 27He will still not play until then.
When can Mats earliest to be back on the ice in the NHL?
- "Some time after Dec. 27, maybe it takes until after the New Year. He wants to safely practice on ice with his new club for a week before he plays first match.
But Mats is physically in top trim after this fall's tough workout, so it is more about driving on ice with his new teammates."

UPDATE 12:05 PM

Toronto Star (like I should trust anyone from out East right now):
Mats Sundin is expected to finalize his playing future as early as tomorrow.

Sources in Sweden say his Swedish representative – Claes Elefalk – has told media in Stockholm to call tomorrow to learn which team Sundin has chosen to continue his NHL career with.

Sundin list just got smaller - UPDATED

And no surprise there really. The Flyers seem to be scratched off the list, as they cannot afford him anyway, said their GM today. No kidding. Truth is, the Rangers cannot afford him either unless they can move somebody fairly significant and/or Sundin takes a pay cut.
Today, my friends, I believe there is a common consensus among pundits, journalists and fans that Sundin may indeed be Vancouver-bound. But I will not believe it until I see it.
The Toronto Star writer Damien Cox thinks Mats should not jump into the NHL this season. I think he's just bitter. Oh and please don't compare Sundin to Vancouver to Messier in Vancouver. That's just silly.

When asked about making a decision Sundin told New York Newsday:

"I think the next couple of weeks," Sundin said. "The way it feels right now, I'm going to play this year, and I'm just trying to get to the point where I'm ready to join a team."
Oh you poor thing. Maybe he's waiting for Sather to clear some roster space before or after the roster freeze period. Who knows.

Speaking of freeze...it's -25 celsius here right now and it's supposed to stay this way all week. If I hear one complaint about global warming I am going to hit someone over the head with an ice block!

UPDATE

According to Bob McKenzie:
Unless someone pulls a rabbit out of the hat at the last minute, Mats Sundin will be, by the end of this week, either a Vancouver Canuck or a New York Ranger.

Sundin met with Rangers' GM Glen Sather on the weekend, but sources say the Rangers have yet to formally indicate exactly how much they are prepared, or able (because of the salary cap), to pay Sundin. Once Sundin's agent J.P. Barry gets that information, perhaps in the next 24 to 48 hours, Sundin is expected to make a final decision on where he will play.

Barry has a previously-scheduled meeting with Vancouver GM Mike Gillis on Tuesday, primarily to discuss contract negotiations for Canuck players Daniel and Henrik Sedin as well as Mattias Ohlund, but Sundin is also likely to be discussed at that time.

Sources say the plan is for Sundin to make a final decision before NHL rosters are frozen on Friday (Dec. 19).

From Sportsnet today:
Mats Sundin rejected a one-year offer by the Philadelphia Flyers and expects to make a final decision on either Vancouver or New York by Friday at the latest.
Rejected! Nice! That's the first decision he's made yet.

What was the last time you read a New York hockey journalist write this about Vancouver:

From Larry Brooks at the NY Post:

Sundin has had a standing two-year, $20 million offer on the table from Vancouver since early this summer. In this case, Vancouver GM Mike Gillis has been to Sundin what Yankees New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman was to CC Sabathia: a patient suitor with far and away the most cash to spend on a free agent operating on his own timetable.

The Rangers' GM, Sather, on the other hand, has a comparatively small amount of money available under the NHL salary cap that he could offer Sundin, who, The Post was told by multiple sources this summer, has a craving to play on Broadway.
Bwahahaha!
I love life in the salary cap NHL world! Suck it, Rangers!

That being said, here is some more Sundin info for you....because deep down you really want to know!

Henrik Lundqvist tried to sell the Rangers to Sundin last summer. From Hockeyexpressen: - I talked to Mats home in Sweden last summer and tried to sell the New York Rangers and says' Henke '.

What was your best argument that he should choose Rangers?

I pointed out two things, and trips that are easy to handle if you play here in New York. You do not need to be away from home so long periods. We are very close to many away games.
Then, I drew attention to that one can live very anonymously in Manhattan, which I think speaks to the Mats after all the years in hockey-mad Toronto.

What can speak against Sundin choose Rangers?

- We may not have as much money to spend under the salary cap, as part of the other interested clubs. Otherwise, I can not see any disadvantages at the moment.

You can see the link next that article to where Sundin says he will play after Christmas.

Sportsnet sources: Canucks and Rangers may be Sundin's top picks

A source tells Sportsnet.ca the Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers are the leading contenders to sign Mats Sundin, but others teams also remain in the mix.
I don't like the Rangers' cap situation. They would have to get rid of the expensive Michal Roszival to make room for Mats' pro-rated contract. Who is going to jump at Roszival?
I like the Canucks' offer not only because it's lucrative, but also because it's a 2-year deal. However, the big issue for Mike Gillis is that if he is going to sign Sundin for that much, how is he going to make cap room for the Sedins and Ohlund, who's contract negotiations are ongoing? Don't forget about extensions for Burrows and others as well. Remember that this Canucks team is not rebuilding. It needs to win this year or next year. Or, at least it seems to be set up that way.

Canucks-Rangers preview - mega post - updated all day

This is going to turn into a mega post over the next 22 hours. I'll post any updates on injuries, lineups, or Ranger-writer bullshit over that span.

Speaking of BS...This is from Ranger-lover Stan Fischler at his blog at MSG.com:

I watched the Canucks lose a shootout to the Islanders on Monday evening at Nassau Veteran's Memorial Coliseum and found the Vancouver sextet competitive, but hardly overwhelming. Yes, Roberto Luongo is a legitimate Vezina Trophy candidate, but then again, so is Henrik Lundqvist. Plus, Henny wins more games than Roberto and, hey, Luongo couldn't even defeat Joey MacDonald in the showdown shootout duel.

The curious thing about the Canucks is that their beat writers believe they are a better team than they showed on the ice in Uniondale. On Game Day, both Vancouver papers treated the Islanders game as a virtual exhibition in preparation for the real test at MSG. And for a short while, they appeared to know something that The Maven didn't know. But Scott Gordon's Isles, if nothing else, compete. They overcame an early (MacDonald's fault) goal, scraped together a tying counter and extended the Canucks to the shootout where Luongo faltered and MacDonald did not.
Who the hell was insinuating that the Canucks-Islanders game was a virtual exhibition game for Vancouver? Not the Canucks Nation Blog, which Fischler was linking to. Whatever. He's high on the Rangers, who don't play 100% good hockey but still win. If anything, he has the ego here. I don't think many Canucks fans or writers develop that until we win between 6-10 in a row. We're too high on BC pot here to develop an ego. I kid...for the most part.

It looks as though the Rangers will not have Scotty Gomez playing until at least Saturday. He has an ankle sprain. Fine by me. I'm a big Gomez fan, but I don't want to see him skate circles around us.

I'm sorry, but I don't think I could handle watching Markus Naslund salute the Rangers crowd if they win. I don't even want him to put up a single point. That would make me hate him even more. We HAVE to beat these guys. There is talk out there that Curtis Sanford might play the Rangers and Luongo play the Wild the following night. For selfish reasons I would hope not. However, we do need our best goalie to play against a division rival. Stay tuned on that.

Alex Edler is no longer quarantined. He has recovered from the flu and will return against the NYR.

STOP BOOING MICHAL ROZSIVAL. From Brett Cyrgalis at the New York Post (saw this originall at Kukla's):
New York has the best fans in the world, and anyone who says different is kidding themselves. And at the top of that heap are Rangers' fans. They are some of the most passionate, the most loyal, the most supportive and, at times, the most harshly judgmental fans in all the world.
I don't think he reads much media on this side of the continent.
First Malik, now Rozsival. No love for D-men on Broadway unless their last name is Leetch, I guess.

Luongo in against Rangers, Sanford to play against the Wild
I guess Luongo really wants to play at MSG. Can't say I blame him. Gad I hope he out-plays Lundqvist.

Demitra practicing with the Sedins
I'm not a big fan of this move, if he plays on the top line again tonight. I know we are paying Pavol the big bucks and he is a top line guy in general, but I preferred seeing his success with Kyle Wellwood over the jive with the Sedins. The Dank-Hank-Pank line leaves Wellwood playing with underachieving guys like Bernier, Pyatt or Raymond. Raymond is pointless in 5 games now I believe. According to the Van Sun he was practicing on the 4th line yesterday. We'll see where he ends up tonight.

Mitchell defends Naslund's leadership
I miss him here because he was an exceptional teammate. He’d do anything for any of the guys. He really cared about what his teammates wanted. People didn’t see that part. People said: ‘Not enough energy, not enough passion, blah blah blah.’ Well, BS; he had that. He just showed it in different ways. (Vancouver Sun)
OK fine, Willie. But those ways weren't on the ice then. We see what he does on the ice...and it lacked passion. Not worth his paycheck in the end. Period.

FREAKY STATS FROM CANUCKS.COM
1 win for the Canucks this season versus an Eastern Conference Opponent (1-3-2). The Canucks lone win versus the East came on November 15th versus the Maple Leafs.

2 wins for the Canucks this season when scoring three or fewer goals (2-6-2). That's not good, kids.

I love those stats under the "Numbers" section of CDC's game preview section. They can either fill your guts with confidence or shred it to pieces.

RANGERS DON'T ALWAYS SCORE A LOT OF GOALS EITHERHenrik Lundqvist mentioned to the NY Post:
"If you look back at the last couple of home games, we haven't scored more than one or two goals, so the defense has to stay sharp," Lundqvist said. "But I like that. I like the challenge. We don't really go after the big show. We go after the two points. It doesn't matter how it looks."
This could be a 2-1 kind of game.

RANGERS' MISTER OCTOBERS
The NY Post mentioned that 2 key Ranger forwards were benched in the 3rd period during their last game against the Senators: Aaron Voros and Nikolai Zherdev. Brandon Dubinsky and Voros especially were red hot in October but have cooled off in a big way. More on Dubinsky's November woes here. Zherdev was a risky signing by the Rangers to begin with. We'll see if he can play his way out of this. Keep up the lousy play, boys!

RANGERS' TOP SPOT DECEIVING
Yeah there is all this talk about the Rangers being first in the East, but look at how many games they have played compared to everyone else. And look at the Capitals and Penguins' records over their last 10 games compared to the Rangers.

Shanahan's July 1 begins now

Brendan Shanahan has lost patience with the Rangers. He has been waiting for Glen Sather to do something to give the Rangers some cap space to sign him. He has been skating daily and staying in shape. But today he has pulled the plug on any chance of returning to Broadway.
From the NY Times:

"I've told Rick [Curran] that I can no longer wait and that it's time to move on," Shanahan, referring to his agent, told The Post this afternoon. "Until now, Rick has been under instructions to tell inquiring teams that my focus was on re-signing with the RangersNew York Rangers , and that I was not accepting any other offers."

"That has changed."

"I honestly don't know what to expect as a free agent right now; for me, this is my July 1," Shanahan said. "Physically I feel great. I don't think it will take very long for me to be back, but I don't know where and when.

"I'm not ruling anything out. Positive things have always happened to me throughout my NHL career, and that's how I'm approaching this. I'm approaching this as an opportunity.

"I am disappointed that I'm not going to be here, but I'm not bitter at all. I believe Glen was always being honest with me. It just didn't work out. I'm sure it's going to, but it's going to be somewhere else.

"I'm looking forward to getting on the ice and playing."
Like the article states, Shanahan will turn 40 in January. He has slowed no doubt, but he is far from dead. He scored 23 goals and 46 points in 73 games last season. He scored 29 goals and 62 points in 67 games the previous year. The year before that he scored 40 goals and 81 points in 82 games as a Red Wing. Uh-oh, there is a serious 3 year decline there. Hell, I'd take him in Vancouver as the 3rd Sedin. Perfect guy for the job....sniper.
But I'm pretty sure Gillis is still waiting on Sundin. Maybe that's what Glen Sather is doing as well.

Comments on the first 2 regular season games in Europe

In point form:

-Looks like about 35% of each game will be filled with power plays. Unbelievable and pathetic. But it isn't going to change so I must stop complaining about it. All those power plays really exposed a couple of issues however:

1. The Sens need a power play quarterback whose name isn't Kuba.
2. The Penguins are really going to miss Gonchar and Whitney.

-Is Gerber the man? He looked shaky at times. This prompted Mike Milbury to suggest that the Sens should be targeting Nikolai Khabibulin. Kelly Hrudey disagreed because he thinks Khabibulin is no longer the dominant goalie he once was. I would say the Sens need a higher calibre goalie than Alex Auld to push Gerber, but the Bulin Wall is out of their price range.

-Sid Crosby bringing out the hits? Impressive! He made Chris Kelly pay twice. Speaking of Crosby, he was mostly flanked by newcomers Satan and Fedotenko. Like I said in my predictions, those 2 are no Malone and Hossa. Not even close. And that my friends makes me happy, because I hate Pittsburgh.

- I never knew that Spezza coughed up the puck so much. But MacLean, Milbury and Hrudey pointed it out after period 1 and then Spezza delivers the buffoonery in overtime by getting stripped of the puck by Miiiiiiisterrrrr Kennedyyyyy.............................Kennedy. Kennedy storms into the Sens' zone and bags a weak one on Gerber.

-All those new faces in Tampa Bay are going to take time to click as a team.

-I know Lightning coach Barry Melrose was bragging about the Lightning being a fun team to watch this year, but by being more entertaining they allowed 41 shots on goal. And they lost.

-Markus Naslund scores the Rangers' first goal of the season? Oh no...please don't make me look like a fool Markus. He looks pretty happy out there doesn't he?

-Scott Gomez is everywhere. What a player. He reminds me of a bee stuck in a jar.

One Ranger fan already getting a dose of Naslund reality

From the Rangers Review:

Despite picking up the first goal for the Rangers, Markus Naslund has continued his hyper unselfish play to the detriment of the team. Look Markus, I get it, believe me, I do. You are a new player coming to a new team with some good players, you don’t want to appear as a selfish “me first” player. However your continual overpassing is getting to the point where it is a detriment to us out there. You were brought in here for 2 simple reasons. 1, you have the speed to keep up with this new attack game we are implementing, and 2, you have a wicked wrist shot. For f***s sake USE IT!!!
I had to laugh. Hey! Wait until he repeatedly takes shots from the circle and misses. You're going to love that trick too! Oh, and don't forget the lame post-game interviews.

Markus Naslund talks about his Vancouver Past

From Mr. Gallagher at The Province. Naslund talked to Gallagher about his time as captain of the Canucks, the Bertuzzi incident and the Rangers.

"Everyone coming to you after the game was part of being captain of a Canadian team, and I didn't mind it that much, but I don't miss it now," said Naslund with an understated laugh. "There were times it wasn't fun and it was tough, of course, because I didn't have the answers. But that was part of the job and I accepted it and it didn't really bother me.

"Maybe I didn't have as much fun playing last year as I used to, and that was always the reason I played and the reason I play now. There were a number of reasons for that. I wasn't playing as well as I should have been and had in the past and that bothered me, and the style we played wasn't something I enjoyed particularly.

"Here, it tends to be a little more open, where you have centres who are looking for you, and everyone is looking to get the other guy the puck. I've always enjoyed ... getting scoring opportunities and that seems to be happening more here playing with Scott or Chris.

"I've been getting scoring chances but I seem to be a little rusty and I'm just not putting them away yet. I never really knew what kind of team they had here but we've got great goaltending, a pretty solid D and three good offensive centres. There are lots of NHL-calibre forwards who aren't going to make the team. There's a lot of depth here. It should be fun."
I am not even going to comment on that because any of you that know me know what I think about Naslund as a player and a captain. No use kicking a dead horse.
Bottom line: I hope the Rangers finish in at least 9th spot this season.
Follow the above link to read the rest of Gallagher's article. Keep a barf bag nearby, or if you are a Nazzy-lover: a box of tissues. How's that for being objective? Cue sarcasm.

Speaking of perimeter-useless players: The Rangers cut Petr Nedved today. Na na na na....

NHL 09 simulation has the Stars winning the Stanley Cup

Sure, this is a pathetic thing to post. But strangely enough, I think the Stars are going to win it this year as well. I'm not on that Wings repeat bandwagon.
Watch what Richards does after a full year in Dallas. Mike Modano is more possessed than he has been in years. Anyway, for the simulation:
-No trades
-No injuries
-No Sundin
-No Forsberg
-No Shanahan

Canucks finished in 8th spot but lost to the Sharks in Round 1.
The Stars defeated the Penguins in 5 games in the Finals. Satan, the Lord of all things evil actually put up a bunch of points during the season and the playoffs. But it was Brendan Morrow who won the playoff scoring race and the Conn Smythe Trophy.

-I'm not posting personal predictions until late September.

Oh, and NHL 09's "Be a Pro" mode is damned cool, but it has its issues. I was getting demoted in Manitoba and told by the coach that I was just "going through the motions". So I was delegated to 3rd line duty. Only thing is, I was leading the team and the AHL in scoring. Lame. However, with 2 weeks left in the season, the Canucks called me up to play on their 3rd line. I excelled there and was eventually promoted to top line center with Demitra and Dan Sedin. The Nucks went right to the Finals and Dank won the Conn Smythe. Good times.
Any of you own NHL 09 yet? It still blows my mind how good it is.

That's enough useless info for you. Then again, there isn't much going on in the NHL right now anyway. However:

- Glen Sather may be giving Mats Sundin a deadline to make up his mind. That could be this Tuesday, according to one NY reporter. Look for Shanahan to be re-signed this week. Sundin ain't doing or saying squat.

-Hayley Wickenheiser is complaining that she has to wear a visor playing in Sweden. The guys don't have to, so why does she? I guess there are some stinky rules in Sweden about females in hockey. Apparently she didn't have to wear one playing in Finland. Run that article through a translator. Just once I'd like to watch her play with the guys in Europe. I hope nobody is going easy on her. Not to be cruel, but she is playing in a men's league after all.

Markus Naslund interview with Game On's John Giannone

Pretty self-explanatory and repeated reasons why he faltered the last couple of years in Vancouver, why he chose he Rangers, and what to expect from him this coming season.

Hat tip to Paul Kukla for the find.
I sure hope the Rangers miss the playoffs. Wouldn't hurt my feelings.

Jagr says he will regret moving to Russia if Rangers land Sundin

Jagr basically told Hockeyexpressen that he is "cursed" if Sundin plays for the Rangers. He would regret that he moved here (Russia). He also said that he promises he'll be "pissed off" if Mats signs there. Run the article through a translator if you don't believe me.
I don't know how serious Jagr was being in that interview. One thing is for sure: Jagr doesn't know where the Rangers sit in cap space.
Jagr also encouraged Sundin to keep playing.

"Whatever you do Mats, do not stop playing hockey. You are too good to stop now. You can go on for many years."
Oh gee whiz. How sweet. Golly. The article also states that the paper's sources claim that Tampa Bay is in the mix for Sundin. Huh.... That makes no sense economically.
The original Hockeyexpressen article can be found here.

**EDIT**
I did some more news-searching about Jagr and found another Hockeyexpressen interview with Jagr. This was more about his decision to play with Omsk in the KHL.
It is clear I had a good bid from here, but I am drawn to something new. I wanted to do something different. KHL has become an alternative to the NHL. If five to ten years, many European players to choose to move here, instead of the NHL then I am pleased to be part of the development.
The reporter said Jagr looked happy.

And speaking of the KHL: they are now accusing an NHL team of poaching players. From John Wawrow at Yahoo Sports:
A newly formed Russian hockey league accused the NHL of poaching two of its players when the Los Angeles Kings agreed to terms with two draft prospects last week.

As a result, the Continental Hockey League (KHL), announced Thursday that it was no longer obligated to abide by a moratorium reached in July, when the leagues agreed against signing players that were under contract.

In a news release, the KHL said the NHL violated that agreement when the Kings signed 2008 second-round draft pick, defenseman Vjateslav Voinov, and 2008 fifth-round pick, center Andrei Loktionov, on Aug. 27. The KHL said Voinov is currently under contract with Chelyabinsk while Loktionov is under contract with Yaroslavl.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly disputed the KHL’s claims in an e-mail sent to The Associated Press. Daly said the league approved both contracts “on the basis of evidence that the two players were free of contractual obligations elsewhere.
The song "Communication Breakdown" by Led Zep is playing in my head right now. This is a finger-pointing war. Who's telling the truth and who's lying? Crazy.

Naslund never more ready to start a season / Bernier ready for impact

Markus Naslund was interviewed by HockeyExpressen.se recently after a quiet summer back home. He says he has a lot to prove after 2 sub-par seasons....blah blah.
He employed a personal fitness trainer from Vancouver this summer. Is it just me or does he look more bulky in that photo?
He said he feels more prepared for the season than ever before.
I think it's fair to say that I am bitter towards the guy. Never was a fan except for those uber-productive years of his.
Regardless, it makes me even angrier when he says things like "I've never been more physically ready to play" for example. It just proves the point that he didn't want to be here, and was not playing to his potential. Or, in other words, WASTING OUR TIME.
Now he plays for the enemy Rangers. How fitting. Now I like him even less. The only thing that could make me dislike him more is if he scores over 35 goals and 90 points on Broadway.

Now on to a player that actually matters on this side of the continent. Today there is a great piece by Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province on Steve Bernier. Bernier talks about why his insecurities started (getting sent to the minors in San Jose while he was kicking ass and taking names), the trade to Buffalo, and what he wants to do in Vancouver.
"I don't want any doubts any more. There's a lot of very good players and I want to prove myself. I want to play a lot of minutes."
I need to work hard every game, every shift," Bernier said. "My goal this year is that every time I'm on the ice, people know it. Either I make a play or I help my teammates with a big hit. Every shift I want to do something that has an impact on the game."
Although concerned about his mental state, I can't wait to watch Bernier play in a Nucks jersey.

Pressure mounting on Sundin to make a decision

From the Ottawa Sun: A league executive told the paper:

"We just want him to make a decision because he's holding up the business of the league right now. There are teams that want to make deals, but they can't do anything until they find out where Sundin is going to go."
"I'd just like him to do something so I can get a few things done myself," said the executive. "The longer this takes, the longer it's going to be for teams to get their rosters settled."

UFA's like Brendan Shanahan and Glen Murray are said to be "waiting on the sidelines" until Mats makes up his mind because teams that want Mats are waiting. (Maybe Shanny and Murray are not signed yet because they are potentially overpriced considering the lackluster seasons they had last year.) Other teams that are trying to shed salary, (like Anaheim moving Matthieu Schneider) are in limbo because they can't move a salary like Schneider's to a team that is waiting to hear from the Swede.
I say: Bring on the pressure.Sundin has had plenty of the time, as the Leafs never even made the playoffs. Plus, if he's going to hold off on a decision until Christmas for example, then he should just come out and say it.
At the same time, Sundin can't be 100% faulted. He has never told any team that he could/would sign with them. He has been consistent in saying that he not sure about what he is going to do. He doesn't owe anybody anything except maybe the convenience of a decision. He also said weeks ago that he'd like to make a decision in August. So I can understand both sides. GM's are going to pressure him so they can finalize their rosters. Sundin, who has been working out but not skating yet, needs to make a life-changing decision.
JP Barry must be answering his phone 24-7 from these GM's. He is going to try squeeze some info out of Sundin soon.
"We're going to talk to Mats in the middle of this week and try to get a feel for where he's at," said Sundin's agent, J.P. Barry. "There's no timetable for a decision. We're just going to try to see how he's feeling."
So expect some news from Barry within the next 24 hours. And I'll bet that news is nothing that we have not heard already.

Oh, and gee thanks Larry Brooks for clarifying that the Rangers won't trade Gomez.
...the Rangers have never considered trading Scott Gomez to clear cap space for Sundin. Nor will they.

Eklund "breaks" most insane rumor of the summer of 08: Sundin to Rangers and Gomez to Vancouver

Yeah I know there are plenty of Eklund haters out there and this shouldn't qualify as news. I am not a hater, I just think he's a master fabricator of rumors and is successfull at it. It is what it is, as Temujin would say.
But this Sundin to NYR and Gomez being traded to Vancouver rumor (rated e4)is bunk for several reasons.

1. Sundin is tight-lipped and has not made a decision yet if he even will play again. There is no news on that front and nothing has changed. I will admit that I have been reading online Swedish newspapers a lot lately waiting for some development there. Nothing yet.

2. Gomez has a no movement clause on his contract. Actually, both Gomez and Drury do. I hear there are a few different types of no-movement clauses, but I don't know what category Gomez's falls into. I would expect Gomez does not want to leave New York city regardless. No way. He's the man there.

3. The Gomez trade makes sense geographically, because Vancouver is the closest NHL city to his native state Alaska. And that is probably a big reason why the dumb rumor is fabricated that way. Because someone assumes that Gomez would like to live closer to his summer home. He does spend most of his summers in Alaska, where he holds an annual charity celebrity golf game in Anchorage to raise money for the Scotty Gomez Foundation. But still, refer to #2. You don't put a no-movement clause in your contract for nothing.

4. Is Glen Sather that mad that he would move his #1 center Gomez, who is only 29 years old, and take on 37 year old Sundin's contract? Sundin may only play for 1 year. Gomez has 5 years left on his contract. He will produce nearly or equal what Sundin will produce. He is a hell of a play maker. Oh and by the way, yes, I think Sather is that mad. But refer to #2 again.

Hey, I'd rather have Gomez than Sundin in Vancouver, but this just isn't going to happen.
Refer to reality, which is that Sundin has not made his mind up yet, for the 100th time....
