Canes lose to Panthers and Ovechkin and co. now have a playoff chance
Unreal. The Canes could not clinch the Southeast Division tonight and now the Capitals can finish tops in that division and 3rd in the East. Amazing how lousy that division is. The Canes can drop all the way out of a playoff spot down to 9th on Saturday if the Caps beat the Panthers on Saturday.
Why oh why don't I have NHL Center Ice again? I want to watch that game!
The Panthers are not to be taken lightly though. They are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games. However, the Caps are 9-1-0 in that span.
Geez, the second year in a row that the east has a playoff spot up for grabs right at the end of the season.
Also amazing is how both the Canes and Senators have not played well since their big pre-trade deadline deal, swapping Stillman and Commodore for Eaves and Corvo.
Go Caps! I want to see Alex the Gr8 in the playoffs.

glad to see destiny in the Caps hands...they've played well enough for the chance. I predict Caps 4-1 and Ovechkin bags another couple.
to continue the last thread, glad you brought up the "skill, but no finish" comment. kinda sums up the entire season. the great ones are never satisfied with the supposed effort they put in, the shots/saves they put up, or even the goals they scored. all they care about is the final score, and they find no satisfaction in anything less than a W.
definitely a few players on the Nux with that desire like Luongo, but they never showed it as a team. too bad we can't fast forward through the off-season...need more Nux hockey now!
It's hard to believe that Canucks hockey is almost over. But I love watching all of the playoffs regardless.
Luongo may show determination, but he didn't help matters any either. This is why a couple of fierce competitor-scoring-sizable acquisitions by Nonis won't hurt, like a couple of Trevor Linden's in his prime. These guys will inject life back into this team.

If Cooke wins the cup with Washington it would be the largest "middle finger" to Canuck fans since Doug Lidster won the cup with the Rangers in 1994.
funny, both yahoo sports and fox sports had front page stories on the collapse of the canucks...basically, buffalo of the west. so hockey watchers outside of Van are just as shocked as we are.
i'm looking forward to some playoff hockey too...with the Nux gone, i can get to know some of the other teams. and i actually like Crosby (ducking for cover). sure, it's hotdog hockey, like Jagr a decade ago, but entertaining nonetheless.

All this talk of Matt Cooke. Fuck Matt Cooke! He was an underachieving tit while he was here and he was wasting salary space. That being said, the Caps could be the 'dark horse' team of 2008...if they win tonight. Watch Florida beat them. Wouldn't that be funny?

hehehe, yeah right, I wouldn't dare. It is a good testimonial of what the major problem with the Canucks is: Linden looking on from the bench, while the Sedins hog the ice-time and Luongo leaves his five-hole wide open!
Gads I hope Washington makes it. Boo to Florida, and you should feel ashamed of yourself for showering that team with so much of your afections! If Washington gets a point, they are in third overall in the east. If they fail to get a point, they finish 9th and Carolina gets the #3 spot.
What a screwed up way to assign league standings.

Was listening to the game, and the crowd was going absolutely batshit insane. Ovechkin was cheering wildly from the bench and encouraging the fans behind him, and the chants of "MVP" lasted for what seemed to be ages. Ovechkin must win the Hart. He has led his team into the playoffs and he's got the Art Ross and the Richard trophies locked up. It would be a crime for him not to win.
