Rypien's hit on Roy

From the Edmonton Sun today:

"At the last second there I was committed to hitting him but he kind of pulled up and went the other way," Rypien said. "I probably could have eased up my speed a bit. I definitely don't feel good about it. You don't want to see a guy leaving the ice like that. It wasn't my intention to hurt him."

Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault sympathized with the fact Roy got hurt, but he didn't think the play should have been a penalty, much less a major.

"It's a player being told by his coach to forecheck, skate hard and steer the play," Vigneault said. "The defenceman has that responsibility, when he's getting that puck."

Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish did not agree.

"I guess he didn't get his face run through the boards," MacTavish said. "I'm sure if he saw one of his players run through the boards face-first and carried out on a stretcher, he'd rephrase those comments."

First of all, shut the hell up, MacTavish. What a reject. I know the one announcer was saying Rypien maybe should have hit the brakes. But it does come down a split second decision and judging by the clip, I don't think Rypien really had enough time to make that decision. He was going to hit him clean from the side, but that's the danger of someone turning their back to the incoming player and facing the boards. It's not the right decsion to make.
In my opinion, Rypien should not have been ejected from the game for that and he sure as hell better not get a suspension.

1. I agree about MacT. He's very grating.

2. Gary Valk was the one saying that he should've hit the brakes, but I don't know how feasible that is given how fast Rypien was going and how he probably didn't expect Roy to turn.

3. Even though he's a jackass, MacT does have nice hair. Unfortunately, hair can't coach a hockey team.

Gotta agree with you on that one. Rypien looked to be going in for a hard check and Roy turned at the last minute, and ducked his head.

The appropriate penalty would be 2min for Boarding and leave it at that. I realize Roy was carted off, but there's a difference between a dirty hit, a reckless hit and an awkward hit. This was awkward but in no way reckless or malicious.

It seems to me Roy looked up to his left sees Rypien coming and then turns into the boards for some reason.. Had Rypien tried to slow down he still would have nailed him from behind.

Man, don't face the boards if you know someones flying towards you..

Rich: Some guys turn around and face the boards BECAUSE they see a a guy coming and think he'll let up. That's not very smart.

Isabella: I almost thought that was Ryan Walter saying that. Sometimes they sound the same. Oh, and Valk has better hair than MacT. By far! haha

Jibble- min. 5 minutes for boarding isn't it?
