Canucks invite Dan McGillis to camp

The 35-year-old McGillis has probably been acquired because Sami Salo is going to miss a fair bit of time with a fractured wrist.
The hard-nosed d-man has not been known to rack up offensive numbers at the NHL level, but he did score 10 goals and 41 points in 68 games with Lowell of the AHL last season.
Is this tryout really necessary? The Canucks are quite deep on defence already, with Edler as the 6th guy with Salo out, and Bourdon waiting in the minors. Perhaps management doesn't feel that Bourdon is ready yet. And maybe they feel the same about Patrick Coulombe as well.
I'm sure the Moose could use the extra defenceman if McGillis gets signed. McGillis would add toughness to either roster for sure.

McGillis career stats.

There's a reason why Dan McGillis is no longer playing in the NHL. I could have even made that case five years ago when he WAS playing in the NHL. Don't the Canucks have anyone in their farm system worthy of a shot?

I think they do. Especially Coulombe. But McGillis could end up playing for Manitoba.
