RFA Compensation scale

Just in case you were curious, the following is a list of what a team that signs an opposing team's restricted free agent owes the other team in compensation. The amount of the offered price tag for the player determines the compensation.

$773,442 or below: none
$773,442-$1,171,882: a third-round pick
$1,171,882-$2,343,765: a second-round pick
$2,343,765-$3,515,647: first and third-round picks
$3,515,647-$4,687,530: first, second and third-round picks
$4,687,530-$5,859,412: two first round picks, one second round pick and one third-round pick
$5,859,412-plus: four first-round picks. (This is what Kevin Lowe would have owed the Sabres had Buffalo not matched the Oilers' offer for Thomas Vanek.)

Have no idea why Kevin Lowe would have given away 4 1st rounders for Vanek. He's good but he's not that good. Crosby or Ovechin maybe but come on. Someone needs to get Lowe out of there before he kills this team for a decade. He admitted they could have kept R.Smythe.

Lowe has clearly lost his mind and is acting out of desperation.

But hey, the Oilers are in the Canucks' division...let them sink to the bottom of the NHL tank!!!!

I gotta feel bad for the Oil, and Lowe absolutely had to do something, but I doubt it will save him for long.

As for buffalo, don't you think if they weren't such idiots last offseason and had gotten Briere and/or Drury signed they could afford to lose Vanek for the 4 1st round picks? That would have been amazing for them, with their talent at scouting.

So really Regier should get fired first, then Lowe. At least Lowe has the excuse that no one wants to play in Edmonton!

Some of that is hindsight...
but I really don't know what they were thinking. Maybe they didn't expect such great seasons out of both of them.
