I won't hype Trade Deadline Day

After Nashville acquired Peter Forsberg last week, I'm even less excited about Trade Deadline Day on February 27th, especially if last year's D-Day was any indication.
Am I going to sit in front of the tube and wait to see if/where hyped guys like Keith Tkachuk and Bill Guerin go? Do I really care where Bertuzzi is going or IF he is being traded at all? A little. But the asking price of these players is too much for teams to afford under the Cap System. Alot of it is just hearsay. The rest of it is possiblity.
The biggest deals at last year's deadline on March 9th, were:
- Vancouver Canucks acquire defenceman Eric Weinrich from the St. Louis Blues for defenceman Tomas Mojzis and a third-round pick in 2006.
-Dallas Stars acquire defenceman Willie Mitchell and a second-round pick in 2007 from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for defencemen Martin Skoula and Shawn Belle.
-Ottawa Senators acquire forward Tyler Arnason from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for forward Brandon Bochenski and a second-round pick in 2006.
-Edmonton Oilers acquire forward Sergei Samsonov from the Boston Bruins in exchange for forward Marty Reasoner, forward Yan Stastny and a second-round pick in 2006.
-Nashville Predators acquire defenceman Brendan Witt from the Washington Capitals in exchange for a first-round draft pick in 2006 and forward Kris Beech.
-Vancouver Canucks acquire defenceman Keith Carney and the rights to defenceman Juha Alen from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in exchange for defenceman Brett Skinner and a second-round pick (originally NY Islanders) in 2006.
-Carolina Hurricanes acquire forward Mark Recchi from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward Niklas Nordgren, forward Krys Kolanos and a second-round pick in 2007. The biggest name moved at D-Day was Mark Recchi....damn....
The previous day, the biggest deals where:
-the Oilers had acquired Dwayne Roloson for draft picks
-Los Angeles Kings acquired forward Mark Parrish and defenceman Brent Sopel from the New York Islanders in exchange for defenceman Denis Grebeshkov, forward Jeff Tambellini and a conditional third round pick.

It was a huge letdown wasn't it? I remember TSN and Sportsnet looking a tad bored and disappointed. I was. But this is the new NHL. Teams are strapped for cash and less willing to part with prospects and draft picks. The asking price of guys like Tkachuk and Gary Roberts are currently too high.

Last season, the biggest deals went down earlier in the season:
-January 30th, 2006, Carolina Hurricanes acquired centre Doug Weight and left wing Erkki Rajamaki from the St. Louis Blues for a first-round pick in 2006, Toronto's fourth-round pick in 2006, Chicago's fourth-round pick in 2007, forward Jesse Boulerice, centre Mike Zigomanis, and the rights to unsigned draft pick Magnus Kahnberg.
-November 30th, 2005, Boston Bruins traded centre Joe Thornton to the San Jose Sharks for forward Marco Sturm, defenceman Brad Stuart and forward Wayne Primeau.
-November 15th, 2005, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim traded centre Sergei Fedorov and a 5th round selection in 2006 to the Columbus Blue Jackets for centre Tyler Wright and defenceman Francois Beauchemin.

Are we going to be disappointed at the lack of big names being moved on D-Day this year? Was last season the sign of how things are going to be?
I suppose anything can happen, like key long term injuries to contending teams. But I'm not holding my breath come February 27th. Especially not if what Brian Burke and John Muckler said after the GM meetings is any indication.
