Nonis' bargain hunting continues: signs Jeff Cowan

The Canucks have claimed LW Jeff Cowan from the Los Angeles Kings today. The 30-year old 6'2", 205 pounder has no goals and 2 assists in 21 games this season. He obviously played further down the depth chart in L.A. In 325 career NHL games, Cowan has 40 goals, 30 assists, is a -43, and has 492 penalty minutes over the span of his 7-year NHL career.
Cowan was falling out of favor in L.A. it seemed, as he was only averaging 7:37 minutes per game.
Do the Canucks really need another goal-less wonder? Is this Nonis addressing team toughness? Maybe Cowan is going to bring fighting back to Vancouver, which we haven't seen a lot of this season. Maybe he wants Cowan to spark the team with a scrap at certain times of the game.
Probably. But if the team isn't consistent offensively after this point, we may have wished for a scoring winger instead.
After a YouTube search, here is what I found on Cowan. The following is a beatdown of Chris Kelly of the Sens:

In this clip, Cowan didn't fare so well.

Cowan's price tag? $532,000.
