Yawney gets the axe in Chicago

The Wizard, Denis Savard, who was the Hawks' assistant coach, will take over head coaching duties.
GM Dale Tallon apparently was not impressed with Yawney's defensive strategies and felt the need to change the Hawk's style. But it really comes down to wins.

"The bottom line is wins and losses and we needed to win more," said Tallon. “We've had some injuries, but in spite of that we're a better team than our record shows. We've won three of our last 15 games and we decided to go in a different direction. We want to play a more up-tempo style game."

It is unfortunate that the Hawks suffered so many key injuries, after starting the season so well. Yawney looked like a coach of the year candidate until Martin Havlat, Michal Handzus, Nicolai Khabibulin, to name a few all went down with injuries and the Hawks started tanking.
Havlat and Rene Bourque are expected to return to action sometime next week, which should change the Hawks' fortunes. Until that time, expect the Hawks to be no better off with Savard behind the bench.
Savard is no stranger to offense, that's for sure! He had 1338 points in 1196 career NHL games over 17 seasons.
