Controversy controversy

Watching Oiler coach Craig MacTavish's anger unravel after referee Mick McGeough's blown call last night was entertaining stuff...and justified. The fact that Ales Hemsky's game-tying goal with 4 seconds left in the 3rd last night was not allowed because Magoo thought he saw Shawn Horcoff make a hand pass was utter lunacy. And then the theatrics of Magoo... MacT left nothing uncovered in his rant.

"It was a retarded call," MacTavish snapped after the game. "There is no other explanation for it. I know he is a veteran official and at times I have found his antics humorous. But if this is the product of that there is a problem.
"It was a ridiculous call. I had no idea what he had called. Nobody saw the hand pass on the play because quite clearly there wasn't one. It's beyond reason.
"He should be suspended."

Today, MacTavish has been fined $10,000 for his comments about Magoo. Atlanta coach also had harsh words for the refs after Atlanta's game against Washington on Friday.
I know the NHL has to protect their referees to some degree, and coaches should be holding their tongues in front of the media. But something has to be done about this bullshit that is refereeing this season. We are seeing blown calls all over the map, and absolutely inconsistent refereeing from game to game, especially when it involves interference. This crap needs to be fixed before the playoffs, especially late in the season when teams' playoff hopes are on the line. We don't want refs deciding the fate of teams. Consistency from game-to-game will be key.
So what can be done to avoid a situation like what happened in Edmonton last night? Why shouldn't video replay be applyed to botched calls? Maybe we don't want to open that can of worms, do we? Players and coaches would be begging for replays every second a penalty was called.
I know Magoo admitted he was wrong after the game, which is fine. But that is no consolation to Edmonton. More onus needs to be put on the referees for situations like this. Magoo should be suspended or fined himself for last night's atrocity. Usually I defend refs because they have a tough job... but Magoo's error was so extreme that I think he should hang for it.
