THURSDAY NHL NEWS

A great little piece from Spector's Trade Rumors:

  • Troy Alexander sends in the following on the Canucks: "Noticed a couple of players listed on the Canucks roster that weren't reported anywhere. 1. Alexei Smirnov - 1st round pick of the Mighty Ducks in 2000 - last played in the NHL in 2003-04 - spent last season with Omsk in Russia. 2. Steve Gainey - 3 round pick of the Dallas Stars in 1997 - spent last season in with Phoenix / San Antonio after a year in France. Smirnov could be interesting as he was highly touted, going number 12 overall, but he never lived up to expectations...maybe a year in Russia straightened him out."
  • Another piece from Spector's: that Bobby Clarke revealed that he offered Simon Gagne a 4-year $20 million, but Gagne is seeking a 3-year $16 million deal. Only a difference of about $300,000 per season.
  • A report from the La Presse newspaper in Montreal: the Habs could be interested in signing UFA Jason Woolley to replace the injured Francis Bouillon.

Can't say too much about Smirnov the player (he's big and Russian), but when he was on the Ducks he was definitely very influential in my vodka-purchasing decisions.

Now that he's gone (and while Selanne is still in Anaheim), I have gone back to Finlandia vodka.

Woolley bully bull! My new motto on Habs rumours is "If you're hearing about it, it ain't gonna happen!"

The Woolley rumor is possible because his agent 'wouldn't comment' when asked about it. Suspicious. He'll need to sign for pennies though
